SC prisons system asks to run with $7.5M deficit

South Carolina's prison system has told the state's financial oversight board it will run $7.5 million short in its current budget.
It will be the fourth year the agency's budget hasn't matched spending and adds to the $77 million in shortfalls the agency already has racked up.
The shortfall has been expected for months after the Legislature cut its budget approved this spring. "We made it known to them that what we were getting was not enough," Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas said.
The state would have to shut down a prison and lay off more correctional officers if the state Budget and Control Board doesn't approve the deficit spending, Corrections Director Jon Ozmint said.
"The only way to cut $7 million from our budget would be to lay off a lot of people really quickly and close a prison," Ozmint said.
