Udul Premaratne has been enlarged on bail with strict conditions. He is barred from participating in student campaigns such as putting up posters and joining in meetings.
High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundera announced that his bail would be revoked and remanded again if complaints were received that he had been engaged in such activities. The Judge made these references after considering the bail application of Udul Premaratne, the Convenor of the Inter-University Students’ Federation. His Lawyers called for the granting of bail as he had received an invitation to participate in the Democratic Students Conference to be held in South Africa on the 13th of this month. Raising objections, the state Counsels said that the suspect had been involved in storming into the Higher Education Ministry and causing damage to public property. After considering these submissions, the High Court Judge enlarged Udul Premaratne on a cash bail of 50 thousand rupees and a surety bail of 500 thousand rupees. The Judge emphasized that the aim of student campaigns should be targeted only at welfare of students without engaging in destructive activities under the guise of such campaigns.
