Sri Lanka started the 2nd Asian Beach Games in negative form as all four Sri Lankans who took part in the men’s and women’s 5km marathon swimming event at Al Quantab beach were unable to create any impact for Sri Lanka.
Tharanga Weerakkodi and Pasindu Gamage took part in the men’s event while W Kaveesha and K Rasangi taking part in the women’s event.
Tharanga Weerakkodi finished the race with 1 hour 04 minutes and 39.7 seconds and placed 16th out of 26 participants. The experienced Pasindu Gamage finished in overall 21st place behind his team mate from Sri Lanka Army and crossed the finish line in 1 hour 10 minutes and 25 seconds.
Kaveesha finished 9th out of 10 participants with a time of 1 hour 22 minutes 41.7 seconds on par with her previous timing. Rasangi could not improve her best timing and finished last with a time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 01.7 seconds.
All four swimmers were at the opening ceremony which went late into the night yesterday and had to travel nearly 145km up and down to take part in the event. This might have affected the performance of the athletes and the Sri Lankan authorities should have considered not taking them to attend the ceremony as their event was scheduled early morning.
The second batch of swimmers is expected to arrive today and they will be in action again on 11th December in the 10km marathon.
