The budget presented in Parliament to make Sri Lanka “Asia’s Miracle” has been approved with a majority of 116 votes.
156 voted in favour of the budget while 40 members cast their votes against it. A notable feature was the President making the reply speech in the House. The President responded to many queries made by opposition legislators during the budget debate which lasted several days.
The President emphatically stated that the Government’s target was to develop every village within the next three years. He underlined that his Government would surmount the challenge of winning the economy in the manner they achieved victory over terrorism. The Government succeeded in making 2009 a full financial year after a lapse of 26 years. The people of the country are now clearly aware as to who was responsible to deprive the country of the GSP facility. He pointed out that a fund raising campaign was operating claiming to the international community that there was a minority issue in the country. President Rajapaksa opined that certain individuals had tried to stir communal hatred during the budget debate. He said sabotaging his speech at the Oxford Union was a part of it.
In his address to the House the President made it clear that he was on full alert over these matters. Making a fervent appeal to the Opposition to join hands with him in developing their villages, he seized the occasion to express his gratitude to all those made a vital contribution to present a very successful budget.
