A 53-year-old Catawba, SC man pled guilty to federal child pornography charges Thursday. Ronal McAteer was accused to possessing about 400 images of child pornography and sharing them online.
McAteer's home was searched by federal agents on March 11, 2010 after the address was identified as a source of illegal images on the internet. According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, McAteer admitted that he shared child porn online. Agents found more than 1000 images were found at the time and 67 movies containing child porn on his computer.
McAteer could face a fine of $250,000 and or 10 years in prison plus a special fine of $100. Sentencing by United States District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie will be imposed at a future date.
In another case, a 39-year-old Rock Hill man was sentenced, Thursday, to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to taking videos and pictures of four children, aged 2 to 10, engaged in sexual acts. Michael Pearson, a registered sex offender in the state, had babysat the children in 2008 and 2009. In some instances the children were videotaped having sexual contact with Pearson.
After serving 30 years in prison, Pearson will be re-evaluated. He could be held indefinitely if it's determined that he's a sexual predator. If, on the other hand, he gets out of jail, his activities will be restricted the rest of his life.
