Two members of the gang that planned to loot a pawning shop in Warakapola had been killed during a search operation. Military Spokesman Maj. General Ubhaya Medawala said two more suspects have been arrested.
The gang had entered the pawning shop in Warakapola at 4.30 p.m yesterday. They had said that they were from the CID and was to inquire into a complaint that the shop had a gold Buddha statue. They urged the employees to open the safe while a female employee had sounded warning alarm at the time of robbery. The robbers had fled in a Dolphin van following this.
The Warakapola Police had pursued the robbers. Two Police Officers lost their lives when the robbers opened fire. The van used by the gang was found abandoned along Devala Road in Warakapola with an altered number plate. A search operation was launched to find the culprits thereafter. The police officers killed had been identified as Lionel Ratnayake and Anura Bandara. One Police Officer who received injuries is undergoing treatment at Warakapola Hospital. The Police said investigations had revealed that the owner of the van is from Welikadawatta in Rajagiriya.
