The programme of granting relief to families affected by floods and landslides will come under the direct supervision of the Government.
Many families in several areas were impacted by the torrential rain experienced during the last few days. More than 360 houses were devastated by landslides. Nearly, 4800 houses were partially damaged. Landslides were mainly reported from the Kandy, Matale, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera visited the effected areas to explore the possibility of improving the livelihoods of the effected families, granting relief. The Minister handed over housing assistance and dry rations to families displaced due to landslides and minor floods in Matale. The Minister emphasized that the construction of houses in landslide prone areas will not be permitted. In the meantime, the Minister drew his attention to the non-opening of the sluice gates of the Bowatenne Reservoir.
