After two years of work and about $100 million spent, a South Carolina coastal county is opening an addition to its detention center.
Officials on Wednesday will cut the ribbon on the expansion to the Charleston County Jail that will relieve overcrowding.
When construction began in 2008, the jail had an average daily population of about 1,760 inmates, even though it was designed to hold only about 1,350. The expanded jail now has a capacity of 2,033 inmates.
