Development of gem and jewellery sector, a priority of Government

Dec 12, 2010 10:47:34 AM - itnnews.lk

Minister Anura Yapa has said that their aim is to encourage small and medium scale industrialists to make Sri Lanka the top exporter of gem and jewellery to the world market.

He said that the persons employed at all levels until the gems are used in jewelleries should be brought together. He said that the exhibition was meant to bring the market and the buyers together. The Minister stressed that the aim of the Government is to make Sri Lanka a centre of gem and jewellery in South East Asia. He noted that maximum benefits should be derived from the existing opportunities as the Government gives priority to the development of this sector. The Minister expressed these views while participating in the inaugural ceremony on the third-day of “Jewels Sri Lanka 2010” exhibition. The aim of the exhibition is to pave the way for the local gem and jewellery industrialists to enter the foreign market. The exhibition held at the BMICH came to an end today. Deputy Minister Abdul Cader and Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Authority Anil Koswatta also participated in the occasion.
