A tense situation had arisen at the UNP Convention. It came to a close while establishing the leadership of Ranil Wickramasinghe.
The UNP Convention was held this morning at the party headquarters of Siri Kotha. Despite the decision made by the party leadership not to permit certain members to enter the convention hall, those members were reported to have entered the hall. A tense situation was created at the venue when they entered. The investigative journalists of the ITN were able to capture the incidents that took place in the Siri Kotha premises, although it is banned for the state media. The Convention was held under the leadership of party leader Ranil Wickramasinghe. The UNP said that the special Convention was held to seek approval for a new constitution and several other proposals. The expectation of the revolutionary group in the party for a change in the leadership was not fulfilled. Party leader Ranil Wickramasinghe called on the members to express their preference for the proposal which was presented on the new constitution by raising their hands. He said that the proposal will be adopted as only one was against.
A Media Spokesman of Siri Kotha said that this was the convention held in the most tense atmosphere. The young Parliamentarians of the UNP participated in the Convention with much enthusiasm. The Siri Kotha Media spokesman said that the constitutional amendments passed at the convention will be implemented in the future. Members representing all districts in the island participated in the convention.
