The examination is being held at 3804 examination centres. 60 thousand members of staff are deployed for the exam related activities. More than 500,000 candidates are sitting the exam. Of them 394,603 are private candidates. The examination will continue until the 23rd of this month.
Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe said 170 rehabilitated child soldiers are also sitting the Examination. 45 of them are girls. Their Examination Centre is at the Tamil Primary School in Vavuniya. An Examination Centre has also been setup at Gamini Vidyalaya in Vavuniya for the children of resettled families. This centre has been set aside for students from the Mullaitivu and Vavuniya Districts.
Children of resettled families in the Batticaloa District are also sitting the Exam. There are 9120 school candidates and 6450 private candidates. There are 108 Examination centres in Batticaloa. The Education Director of Batticaloa said that special protection has been provided to the centres.
Our Representative says that the students from the upcountry plantations are also sitting the exam enthusiastically. The Government has launched a wide ranging programme to improve education in the plantation sector. The Education Director of Nuwara Eliya noted that the students of the area had achieved high marks in the A/L examination and such an improvement can be expected at this Examination too.
