Growing up, sisters Angelica "Angel" Vurgess and Catherine McKenzie shared many experiences - going to the movies, shopping, eating out, going to church, singing together - all the typical things that sisters share.
But in September, the Rock Hill pair shared a totally different experience: Vurgess gave one of her kidneys to McKenzie.
"It takes a lot of love for somebody to give you a major organ," said McKenzie, who lived in Orangeburg for 10 years and graduated from South Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in English. "It's important to have good friends and family, but if I hadn't had my sister, I don't know if I would have made it.
"She gave me the gift of life."
The sisters share more than love - they also share a deep Christian faith that they say strengthened and encouraged them through the dark days of McKenzie's illness and their subsequent surgeries.
