Ray Stevens, the S.C. Department of Revenue director, has resigned his post and will join a Columbia law firm, according to a Revenue Department news release.
Stevens was appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford to the cabinet position in 2006. Stevens will finish the year at Revenue and will join the law firm of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein on Jan. 3. Gov.-elect Nikki Haley will nominate Stevens' replacement.
“It’s been a privilege, an incredibly fulfilling experience," Stevens said. "One I wouldn’t trade for anything. But, by early fall of this year, with Governor Sanford’s term ending, I’d pretty well decided to head back to my litigation roots.”
Stevens is a veteran in state government, having served as an administrative law judge and in the S.C. Attorney General's Office, running the Tax Division.
