The Government has decided to make it compulsory to register all vehicles transporting school children.
The measure has been taken in view of the security of the school children. Issuance of licenses for all school vans will take place from January next year. Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority Anoma Dissanayake said that licenses are currently being issued for school vans in the Western Province under the first phase. From January the vehicles will be subjected to random checks. The programme has been jointly launched by the National Child Protection Authority, All Island Union of School Vans and the Civil Defence Transport Union.
