Charleston officer climbs tree to cut man down

Officer William Janicki could only stand and watch Sunday as the 27-year-old man climbed higher into the tree with a rope gripped tightly in his left hand.
The five-year North Charleston officer tried to coax the man back down before he could hurt himself, but he only climbed higher, ascending some 18 feet above ground before perching out on a limb.
Janicki watched the man wrap one end of the mooring rope around a limb and then wrap the other end around his neck.
"He looked me dead in the eyes and said, 'I don't want to do this any more,'" Janicki said Tuesday.
The man then scooted off the branch and dropped.
