The Government has decided not to increase the electricity bills of consumers who are using less than 90 units per month.
The Ministry of Power and Energy has emphasized that the eight percent hike in electricity rates as proposed in the Budget, will not impact consumers who use less than 90 units. About 78 percent of consumers use less than 90 units. Accordingly, the increase announced in the Budget will not impact them. Further the Ministry said that small scale and Medium scale entrepreneurs belonging to the GP 1 are also not entitled for the 8% hike in the bill. Apart from that 25% of the bill would be reduced from religious institutions, schools, hospitals and State offices said the Ministry. . Meanwhile, a revision of the electricity bill would be made every 06 months. The Public Utility Service Commission has decided that changes would be made according to the increase in the price of fuel and according to the rainfall.
