Cold weather is not just hard on people.
More than 100 sea turtles stunned by chilly water have washed up on North Carolina beaches in the past week, and conservation programs there have asked the S.C. Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program in Charleston for help.
The Charleston program's hospital took in 14 of the turtles transported there Monday by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Five of those were subsequently moved to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Tuesday, the aquarium said. The nine others, seven green sea turtles and two Kemp's ridley turtles, will remain in Charleston. There are now 18 turtles in the hospital, a record patient count.
Rehabilitation takes seven to eight months typically, the aquarium said.
