National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala has opened the cage of the newly born orangutan cub for public view for the first time after its birth.
The baby orangutan was born on the 03rd of this month. The cub is the first born in Sri Lanka in 28 years. This is the first time that the cub has been taken out of the cage and displayed to the public after its birth. The mother and the cub came out of the cage amidst the chanting of Seth Pirith by the Maha Sangha. They won the hearts of the visitors to the zoo.
The public have been given a chance to propose a name as well to the orangutan cub. The parents of the cub, Aki and Yufo who are of Indonesian origin, arrived at the Zoo in 2003 under an animal exchange program between Indonesia and Sri Lanka Doctors said that the mother nd the cub are in good health. They are considered as the last orangutan couple to be given away to a foreign country by Indonesia.
During this school vacation, the children can visit the zoological gardens and see to themselves this new stranger.
