Columbia City Council members have scheduled the District 2 City Council election for July 13.
The filing period will open April 12 and close May 13. Candidates who had filed for the first election will have to file again. However, the
city will refund the candidates' first filing fee.
The election will replace former Columbia City Councilman E.W. Cromartie, who resigned March 9 after being charged with not paying
his federal income taxes.
Council had originally scheduled the election for April 6, yesterday, but a panel of three federal judges stopped that election because they said it violated the federal Voting Rights Act.
Josh Stroman, who had filed as a candidate in District 2 for the first election, asked council members to hold the election in June. But City
Attorney Ken Gaines said that was impossible to do and comply with state law about public notice for local elections.
