S.C. unemployment dips in November

Dec 17, 2010 9:44:00 AM - thestate.com
South Carolina's jobless rate dipped slightly in November to 10.6 percent from 10.7 percent the previous month.

For the year, unemployment has dipped by nearly 2 percentage points in South Carolina. And there are nearly 8,000 more jobs in S.C. compared to the same month a year ago. Both facts are a sign of slow but sure improvement in job growth.

“This news shows momentum in key areas.” said John Finan, Executive Director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, in a news release. “The state continues to make progress as the unemployment rate declines, while experiencing ongoing growth in the areas of Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade, and Health Services.”

The state's 10.6 percent jobless rate is inching closer to the national unemployment rate of 9.8 percent. South Carolina began 2010 with a 12.5 percent unemployment rate, then the third-highest jobless rate in the country.

Lexington County has the state's lowest unemployment rate at 8 percent. The unemployment rate for Richland County is also among the state's lowest, at 9.3 percent.
