The Agriculture Ministry has planned to cultivate 1.5 million home gardens during next year. Minister Mahnda Yapa Abeywardena has said that his Ministry is prepared to provide the necessary facilities in this connection.
The Minister said that through the budget the President is proposing to cultivate one million home gardens next year. He said so far 5000 home gardens are cultivated in the Matara District. It is expected to increase up to 1.5 million. He said that all should contribute towards development. He noted that this is the support that one can extend from home. The Minister expressed these views at a function held at the Weligama Town Hall to handover seeds and agricultural implements to farmers free of charge. About 1000 farmers benefited from the programme. The Chairman of the Hadabima Authority of Sri Lanka Nandasena Herath was among those present.
