The Perahera started from the Sri Pada Raja Maha Vihare at Galpoththawala in Pelmadulla at around 5.30 this morning launching the pilgrimage season. The Annual Perahera is taking under the guidance of the Ven. Handapangoda Sri Vimala Thera head of the Sri Pada Vihare and the Ven. Dampahala Seelananda Thera of the Sri Pada Vihare. The Perahera is wending its way through the Ratnapura Maha Saman Dewala, Kuruwita, Eheliyagoda, Talduwa, Karawanella, Yatiyanthota, Ginigathhena and Hatton areas.
The Perahera will reach the Uda Maluwa from Nallathanniya tonight. A special Budha Pooja and and religious ceremonies will be held with the dawn of Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day, when the pilgrimage season will commence. Thereafter the traditional performance of lighting the “Dolosmahe Pahana” and the placing of casket in the Uda Maluwa will take place. Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena, Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath and many peoples representatives were present at the inauguration of the ceremonies.
