The programme to provide coconuts at a concessionary price will be continued.
The programme was launched under the patronage of Minister Jagath Pushpakumara to provide coconuts to consumers at a lower price during the festival season. The consumers have expressed appreciation about the programme. The Minister has said that the programme of the Ministry has had an effect on the high price of coconuts available in the market. The Minister said that he personally checked the situation in several towns. When a coconut was provided at 30/- rupees the coconuts that were available at the market for 50 to 55 rupees have come down to 40 to 45 rupees. He said that they will adhere to other strategies in the coming weeks to provide more coconuts to the market. The Minister expressed confidence that this would further decrease the price.
Coconuts were provided at a concessionary price in Malabe, Homagama and Nugegoda areas today under the supervision of the Minister. Meanwhile a programme to sell coconuts at a lower price was also carried out in Yakkala area under the patronage of the Secretary to the Janatha Estste Development Ministry Anura Siriwardena.
