Sri Lanka assures support to the Fiji Islands to improve their judicial system. This assurance was given during a discussion the Chief Justice of Fiji had with the President.
Chief Justice Anthony Harold Cumberland Gates who is on an official visit to Sri Lanka met President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees this morning. The discussion centred on soliciting support of the veteran and experienced legal luminaries of Sri Lanka to improve the judicial system in the Fijian Islands. The President pointed out that it was more appropriate to deploy experienced and talented officials with the direct mediation of the Chief Justice and the Attorney General.
The President further pointed out that the programme should be crafted so that both countries will secure benefits. Already, Sri Lankan Judges and Lawyers are serving in Fiji. Its Chief Justice noted that it was a Sri Lankan woman who is holding a high position in their Criminal Court. Further expanding cooperation between the two countries was another topic which was dealt at length during this discussion. Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Foreign Secretary Rumesh Jayasinghe and Justice Secretary Suhadha Gamlath were present at this meeting.
