Big-city jargon sounds out of place in hardware store with small-town warmth
It was only a help-wanted notice taped to a hardware store window in the small town where we live, but it threw me for a loop. It advertised for an "information technology" assistant, words that sounded like the death knell of the reason we bought a home in LaPorte, Ind. We wanted a year-round version of Bedford Falls, the mythic village in "It's a Wonderful Life," the 1940s movie whose reruns herald the Christmas season.
