Government is considering the launching of several plans to increase coconut production. Minister Jagath Pushpakumara said a programme to grow four million coconut trees was being mooted.
He said the programme will be launched in several stages. Samurdhi beneficiaries will be encouraged to grow at least four coconut trees according to the land available through the Samurdhi officers.
In addition discussions have already been held with the Education Minister to launch a project for the students in Grade 6 next year. They will be provided three to four coconut seedlings and a project book to collect information. When they have passed the Ordinary Level examination, the students who have properly maintained the coconut trees will be granted scholarships to study in the A Levels. Accordingly, it is planned to increase annual coconut production up to 3.5 billion from the current 2.7 to 2.8 Billion.
