Programme to reintegrate prison inmates into society

Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera has said that a programme is being launched to reintegrate prison inmates into society.

The Minister said the programme aims to make a psychological change in the inmates preventing them from being marginalized in society and returning to the prison once again . He said that by engaging them in various activities socio-economic benefits can be achieved. The skills of the inmates can be displayed by using their labour in various activities that would lead towards economic achievements. He said that they can be convinced to transform through these activities.

The Minister was addressing the 93rd Annual General Meeting of the Prisoners Welfare Association. Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabral was the Chief Guest. He said the Central Bank is assisting Prisoner Welfare programmes. President of the Prisoner’s Welfare Association Sam Wijesinghe, Commissioner General of Prisons V.R. de Silva were among those who participated in the occasion.
