The Coconut Development Ministry has implemented a programme to shatter the trade mafia of increasing the price of coconut arbitrarily. The Ministry is already selling a coconut at a nominal price of 30 rupees. The Coconut Development Board has undertaken this task with the collaboration of the Self Employed Federation. This programme is operative in many populated cities daily. In the meantime, the Government has launched several programmes to increase coconut production. The facility which has been established at Vauxhall Street in Colombo can store Coconuts which are collected from around the country. A storage facility of the Janatha Estates Development Board is being utilized for this purpose. The coconut gathered in this manner is being distributed among consumers through the CWE and the Cooperatives network. This streamlined programme is operative from today.
