The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to reconstruct the drainage system in the city next year at a cost of Rs.60 million.
The CMC has attributed the flooding in the city to the drains with low capacity that are in the city.
CMC Special Commissioner Omar Kamil has told the media that the drains could only hold some 50mm of rainwater at a time.
However, the rains experienced in Colombo and its suburbs currently stand at approximately 66 mm.
Kamil has said the drainage system will be reconstructed because of the frequent showers experienced lately.
The CMC has also allocated Rs.88 million for the reconstruction of a new sewerage system in the city with ADB funding.
