South Carolina has implemented a new telephone system to provide road condition information to motorists.
The State newspaper reported Wednesday that the state Transportation Department is providing SC511 Travel Information Service for free by telephone.
Coordinator Mike Bowman said Tuesday the initial system is up and running. It's available to wireless customers of AT&T, Sprint/Nextel, Comporium, Farmers Telephone, Horry Telephone, Sandhill Telephone, West Carolina, Time Warner and Spirit Telecom.
The service also can be accessed by dialing 1-877-511-4672.
Wireless phone charges for voice or text messages may apply.
