India has banned the export of onions. This follows the doubling in price in the past week.
The increase in the price has been attributed to the unusually heavy rain experienced in the cultivation areas as well. Another reason was hoarders and speculators. In India prices have soared to 70 rupees per kilo from 35 rupees last week. The ban will be effective until the 15th of next month. India is importing Onions to ease shortages. High prices of essential commodities such as Onions had previously sparked unrest. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters in New Delhi that they expected the situation to be normal within two to three weeks. Imported Onions have now begun reaching India from neighbouring Pakistan.
