For the first time since 2004, the championship games of the Chick-fil-A Classic will have a Midlands flavor.
Irmo knocked off Rockdale (Ga.) County 58-55 in the Class II semifinal, and Keenan followed that up with an impressive 56-49 victory over Norcross (Ga.) Wednesday night at Blythewood to earn a spot in the Classic I championship tonight.
The Yellow Jackets will face Memphis Central for the Classic II championship tonight at 6:30. The Raiders will face United Faith Christian Academy for the Classic I crown in the nightcap at 8.
The last time a team from the Midlands won the tournament was 2004, when Richland Northeast and Lower Richland each claimed crowns. Summervilles Pinewood Prep played for titles in 2007 and 2008.
We won this thing in the first or second year, and we havent been back to the championship since, Keenan coach Zack Norris said. Were just honored to be back. I told them if we played hard and did the little intangibles like boxing out and taking charges, that we would probably be in the finals.
