The rice consumption has increased in comparison to the last year according to a report by the Department of Census and Statistics.
The requirement of 2009 was 2.249 million metric tons while in 2010 it has increased to 2.354 million metric tons. In 2009 the total rice production amounted to 3.652 million metric tons. It has increased to 4.04 million metric tons during this year. The increase in production is believed to have contributed towards the increase in the consumption level. The people living in the North and East have shown a trend of consuming larger quantities of rice. The Export Tax of wheat flour also contributed towards rice consumption. Increased demand for rice has also recorded in the Central Hills as well. This has created an upward trend in the consumption of coconut. The report shows that the people in the North and East are increasingly consuming coconut in the peaceful atmosphere that has been created in the country after the elimination of terrorism.
