Media personalities receive “Esi Disi” mass media scholarships, making a reality another pledge of the Mahinda Chintana in arming media personnel with knowledge and experience.
The awarding of scholarships to 75 media personnel took place at the Media Ministry today. It was held under the patronage of Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. Media personalities representing the Electronic and Print Media of the State as well as the private sectors received scholarships. Selections were made by an independent interview panel. The Government hopes to improve the standard of their service providing further education and training. At the same time, it is adopting action to extend maximum facilities to them. It is in this respect that the scholarship programme had been unveiled, so that the local media personnel can be empowered setting an example to other countries in the region. A programme to give assistance to journalists to secure computers and camera equipment had also been launched under the Mahinda Chintana. Giving his views on this occasion, the Minister said media personalities are vested with the responsibility of discharging their duties in the development of the country.
The Minister said that the knowledge gained can be used for the benefit of the future of a country or a nation. He referred to the responsibilities and duties of the media. He reminded the journalists where to put a halt or proceed in discharging the responsibilities.
Media Secretary W.B. Ganegala referred to the responsibilities of the media when considering the challenges the motherland confronted. He said there is a dire need as journalists to work with responsibility towards the people.
Media personnel expressed their gratitude to the Government for the assistance given on behalf of their education.
