The sluice gates of several reservoirs have been opened due to incessant rains experienced in several areas in the country.
All tanks in the Polonnaruwa area have been filled while the Regional Irrigation Director E. Sumanadasa said that all ten sluice gates of the Parakrama Samudraya were opened. He said that each sluice gate has been opened by nine inches releasing 1200 cubic feet of water per second. He said that due to the opening of the sluice gates the water will increase up to the level of the Colombo Batticaloa road and floods will be caused only if the rains will increase. The Bowatenna Reservoir is filled to capacity due to the rains. Chief Engineer H.M.L.R. Hearath said that that sluice gates are expected to be opened during this afternoon and requested the people living in the lower reaches of the Amban-ganga to exercise caution.
