President Rajapaksa has called upon the people to bring the happiness and joy of Christmas into the hearts of small children.
In his Christmas greetings, the President said the purpose of celebrating Christmas is to enshrine the message of peace and love in one’s heart. It is especially a time to spread the message of love and compassion towards the poor, and peace among all peoples. He noted that their great commitment in the recent past to promote solidarity among communities, is in keeping with the teaching of Christ to ‘love thy neighbour’. Their efforts to free the people from poverty have been appreciated by Christians and those of all other faiths, alike. He said that the three kings came to worship the new born child guided by the star light that marked his birth. He observed that similarly, we must bring the joyous message of Christmas closer to the hearts of the children. The President wished everybody a Happy Christmas filled with peace and joy.
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his Christmas Message said he considers the elevation of His Eminence Malcom Ranjith to the rank of Cardinal to represent the South Asia region and thus bringing a lot of acclaim and honour to Christian devotees of Sri Lanka and to mother Sri Lanka, as a very special gift bestowed to the country this Christmas. He said that a favourable environment has been established to provide the opportunity to celebrate the much-loved Christmas that once seized off our hands by the unreasonable 30-year long war, more meaningfully and without indifferences to cast, creed or race.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe in his message called upon the people to extend their hands to help people who have lost all hopes. Mutual trust should be instilled in the hearts of people while helping each other. He opined that the aspiration of all people was peace which is reminded again by the message of Christmas
