Religious ceremonies mark Christmas

The pealing of Church bells at midnight heralded the dawn of another Christmas.

Christians throughout the world celebrate another Christmas, the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. It was on such a day that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Sri Lankans celebrate the Christmas amidst fulfilled expectations of peace while the people in the world celebrate Christmas with hopes for peace. The midnight mass was held in churches throughout the country. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith celebrated midnight mass at St. Sebestian’s Church in Moratuwa.

Services are being held in a number of churches including St. Anthony’s Church at Kochchikade and at St. Lucias Cathedral Kotahena.

Our representatives said several programmes are being held since last night to celebrate Christmas. Midnight services were organized in churches in an around Colombo as well as the in the North and the East. A special Christmas Service was held at St. Mary’s Church in Batticaloa. It was officiated by Bishop of Batticaloa and Trincomale Rt. Rev. Prof. Kingsley Swamipillai.

A special security plan is in place in almost all main cities to ensure a peaceful festive season. A Christmas Carol Service organized by the National Housing Authority was held under the patronage of Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

A Carol service was also held at the St. Mary’s Church Dehiwala making Christmas. The Army Band provided music. It was held under the patronage of Rev. Fr. Marcus Ferdinando. ITN aired live the Christmas Service at St. Anne’s Church, Talawila.
