The people throughout the country have come together to commemorate the Tsunami.
Tsunami commemoration ceremonies were held at several places including Navaledy in Tiruchendur and Nawa-modera in Batticaloa. People lit candles before the memorials.
Alms were offered to 100 bhikkus at the Sri Jinaratana Maha Vidyalaya in Paraliya, Thelwatte, organized to mark the sixth anniversary of the Tsunami. It was held under the guidance of the Ven. Meewanapalame Dhammaratana Thera.
A special religious function was held at the Tsunami memorial at Paraliya to invoke merits on those who lost lives in the Tsunami. The programme was organized by the “Tharunayata Hetak” organization with the assistance of Security forces personnel.
The commemoration ceremony in Galle was held at the Magalla bridge according to the Japanese tradition. The procession that started near the Japanese Peace Pagoda ended at the Magalla bridge and earthen lamps were floated on the river.
Relics were enshrined in the Tsunami Commemorative chaithya built at the Sambuddha Jayanthi-kaarama temple in Rambukkana under the guidance of Ven. Madawala Gnanaratana Thera.
