India’s Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar arrives in the island to firm up bilateral cooperation.
He is in the island on a three-day visit with a seven member delegation. In addition to holding bilateral talks with President Rajapaksa, he is slated to meet key defence officials to strengthen bilateral defence ties with post war Sri Lanka. He has been quoted as saying that it is important that the two countries had a framework for peace-time relationship. His visit coincides with the first annual defence dialogue between the two countries. The decision to institute a mechanism of an annual defence dialogue was agreed upon during the meeting between Prime Minsiter Dr. Manmohan Singh and President Rajapaksa in June. As a result of the meeting, a programme has been launched to improve defence ties for the benefit of the two countries.
