Arrangements are being made to commence the train services on the upgraded Galle-Matara rail line from 15th of next month.
The development work was launched recently from Galle to Matara in the first phase. In the second phase the work will be carried out from Galle to Hikkaduwa while the third phase consists of the stretch from Hikkaduwa to Kalutara. The work is being carried out with Indian aid. Tains will operated at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour after completion of the work. During the construction period a joint train-bus service has been launched for the convenience of the commuters. After upgrading, the Government expects to operate trains in a short period of two hours between Colombo and Matara.
