While some consumers braved a rare Columbia snow Sunday to use gift cards and exchange unwanted gifts, Midlands’ retailers are expecting heavier sales throughout the rest of this week because many shoppers opted to stay home on the day after Christmas – typically a busy day for stores.
“We were pretty busy, but it wasn’t busy like a normal day after Christmas because of the weather,” said Tom Dornfeld, general manager of Columbiana Centre near Harbison Boulevard. “We’ll probably just be busier than we normally would have been this week.
“Overall, it won’t have a negative effect.”
Charlie Gwinn, general manager of Columbia Place Mall on Two Notch Road, said the slowdown in sales the day after Christmas is not nearly as disruptive as it would have been in the rush before the holiday.
“We definitely were off the typical day-after-Christmas pace,” Gwinn said. “(But) this is not a lost sales situation.”
