Minister Basil Rajapaksa has referred to plans to develop the handloom textile industry as a cottage industry. This, he said, will be an impetus to improve the rural economy.
The Minister said that the President in the Budget proposed to launch one million domestic economic units with the intention of generating income for the people. He pointed out that the handloom textile industry can be considered as a venture which will strengthen the economy of women.
The Minister was speaking at the opening of the National handloom Textiles Exhibition and Trade Fair. It is being held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition Hall for three days. The presentation of golden awards and prizes to outstanding work related to the handloom textile industry took place under the patronage of the Minister. Minister Risath Bathiyudeen and Deputy Minsiter Jayaratne Herath were present.
