The Government is providing 50,000 rupees to help build houses destroyed by torrential rain in Batticaloa. It is also planning to grant relief on behalf of cultivations damaged by floods.
The number of families displaced by floods in the Batticaloa district is 56,259. A streamlined programme has been crafted to grant them relief with the mediation of the Disaster Management and Resettlement Ministries. Accordingly, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that it had been decided to provide 50,000 rupees to build houses that have been totally damaged.
Agreement has also been reached to provide compensation on behalf of partially damaged houses. It is planned to provide kitchen utensils. 1200 of the 5000 families resettled are seriously affected by the heavy rainfall. Deputy Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan said it has been decided to provide dry rations worth 4500 rupees by the Resettlement Ministry for the benefit of these families.
