Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said that all local bodies will be dissolved within the next two weeks.
The term of office of the local bodies are due to end next year. He said that action will be initiated to appoint new representatives through the poll in March that will be held after the dissolution of the local bodies. He revealed that action would be initiated to hold the election based on the preferential system.
The Minister said that it would take some time to demarcate the wards after the presentation of the new Bill. He pointed out that at least two years is needed to complete this work. Accordingly, they had decided to hold elections based on the present system as they cannot postpone the polls. Action will be taken to conduct the election based on the new format after the adoption of the Bill at the next Local Government polls.
