A senior government official has said there is a heavy backlog of about 650,000 cases pending in Courts countywide for a long period and that it was increasing at alarming proportions.
The government had allocated Rs. 400 million to expedite the hearing cases.
Addressing a workshop for the Kurunegala District Conciliation Boards, Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Secretary of the Reconciliation Board Commission D.A.D. Arandana has said the government was trying to find quick solutions to this national issue.
He has said the Sri Lankan judiciary at present is staffed by only 300 judges, which is a clear indication that the litigants were facing hardships due to the long delays in courts.
“The government that focused on this national issue allocated Rs.400 million to expedite the hearing of cases,” Arandana had said.
