The tense situation at the Vavuniya Prison has been brought under control.
Three inmates sustained injuries in an attack orchestrated by 12 LTTE suspects, jailed in connection with robberies and a number of illegal activities. A priest was amongst those who have been attacked. Two inmates are still receiving treatment at the Vavuniya General Hospital. The Prison officers transferred the former LTTE cadre who was found to have masterminded the attack. 11 inmates had taken 75 other inmates hostage to protest against the transfer. Our representative said they broke equipment provided for prisoners’ welfare such as Carom Boards and threatened the officials, behaving in an unruly manner.
