A circular will be issued for the payment of increased salaries and allowances to the public sector from next month. Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella pointed out that the Ministers had approved this proposal.

The Minister revealed that it has been decided to pay the public salary increase from next month. They will receive a five percent special allowance on their basic salary and non staff officers will get a 600 rupee cost-of-living increase. The payment of this cost of living allowance to staff officers will be made with effect from the 1st of July next year. Also, pensioners will get a 300 rupees cost of living allowance increase. Accordingly, the Cabinet had approved a memorandum submitted by the President to pay these increases to all employees also of statutory boards, Corporations and foreign funded projects as well.

Many programmes are underway to strengthen the public service and thereby upgrade the service that can be provided for the public. These are been implemented under the guidance of the President. Large number of employees had been recruited to the public service. Programmes to provide various incentives and additional facilities are also being implemented. Public employees are also afforded an opportunity to purchase duty free vehicles. While the maximum contribution of public employees would be sought on behalf of the development process, the Government’s intention is to accord relief to them, surmounting challenges.
