The Sri Lanka Army has destroyed over 300,000 land mines within a land area of 1,870 square kilometers.
Military Spokesperson Major General Ubhaya Medawela has told the local media that the land mines have been destroyed by the Army Field Engineers involved in the de-mining operation.
Major General Medawela has said the respective clearing operation was conducted in Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa and Vavuniya districts.
Close to 1,300 soldiers have been deployed to de-mine areas in the North and East.
According to the Spokesperson, several international organizations together with a local company has been involved in de-mining work in selected areas in the North and East provinces.
