A special inquiry is being launched into the devastation of a coconut plantation of the Potthukkulama Estate in Pallama.
Employees said that the rich coconut cultivation of the Potthukkulama Estate, coming under the purview of the Coconut Research Institute, had been destroyed. The employees had lodged complaints with the Minister with regard to this incident, even before a week had lapsed since the Government’s announcement on the ban on felling of coconut trees. Accordingly, Minister Jagath Pushpakumara has ordered an immediate investigation. A team including the Additional Secretary to the Coconut Development Ministry has visited the plantation for the conduct of the inquiry. More than 100 coconut trees had already been uprooted. The workers accused that arrangements had been made to sell the uprooted trees.
