The current controversy surrounding the Sri Lankan national anthem is an unwanted and unnecessary issue at this juncture. In the aftermath of a long but successful war against separatism the immediate task facing the nation would be healing the wounds of war and strengthening a unified nation.
Military victory in war does not automatically result in genuine unity being established.There is an imperative need to address the underlying causes of the war by formulating an acceptable political package acceptable to an estranged people. Capturing the hearts and minds of the long suffering Tamil people of Sri Lanka is more important than re- capturing territory held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
